Course Summary slide - before or after the quiz?

Jul 20, 2020

Hello, I am building one of my first courses that include a quiz. I am curious where to put the course summary slide - before or after the quiz? Of course I  will have a Quiz results slide at the end of the quiz, I just have a doubt about where to put the summary...

I would put the summary slide before the quiz. You are giving the learners
another opportunity to deepen their learning before testing. Instead of just
repeating content, try to provide a summary that is a bit unique and brings
things together.

Some people, including me, sometimes makes the last slide a review of the
learning objectives:

"At this point, you should now be able to."

In some company cultures, this is seen as the mark of professional
instructional design. In other cultures, this could be overkill and does
need to be stated. However, it should be part of the design and desired
outcome.

Hope this helps!

That's a great question, William! I usually put the summary slide at the very end of the course, after the quiz, but I can totally see Susanne's point that it could be helpful to put it beforehand to give learners a chance to review everything before the quiz.

I think in the end it's really up to you and what you think makes the most sense for your course. There's no hard and fast rule!

While we're on the topic of summary slides, I thought I'd point out that my lovely co-worker Sarah Hodge wrote an article about things to include on them over here: 4 Summary Screen Ideas for Your E-Learning Courses. She even designed a few slide templates to go along with it that you can download for free over here

I hope that's helpful! I'm curious to see what others have to say about this.
