COVID-19 and Folding@Home
Mar 12, 2020
With reports of more and more COVID-19 cases being reported and the WHO finally classifying it as a pandemic, I feel like this would be the perfect opportunity for all of us in Tech to participate in a good deed initiative such as Folding@Home.
Folding@Home is a project by Stanford University that uses our computing power to help study the process of protein folding so as to aid research on various diseases, including many forms of cancer, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, Parkinson's, as well as COVID-19. It is basically a big distributed supercomputer, and you can contribute a node! The application has virtually zero additional overhead to your computer as it utilizes your computers' idle resources, so you won't experience any slowdowns.
Additionally, those of us connected to organizations with a good amount of computing power, whether those are centralized operations or decentralized (such as Articulate) could help spread the word and be part of something good.
Just my 2c,
Alex

Hi Alexandros,
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I always learn something new when I read your posts. Keep up the great work!
Cheers,

Thanks Julie,
Coming from you that really means a lot.
If there’s anyway I can help any of you with this initiative (such as tips and tricks I’ve learned during my very limited run with the app so far) I would be glad to respond.
Bravo Alexandre,
I will pass the word to my healthcare professional colleagues. I am working for Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar and your Folding@Home project sounds very interesting and challenging.
