Creating a variable to track completion of a module

May 13, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I need some help.  I am trying to create a module that allows the user to navigate through the content as they wish, but I have been unable to figure out how to track their movements through the module to ensure they have viewed all the areas.

Could someone help walk me through creating a variable that I cab use to track completion of the module? I'd also like to have check marks appear over the different areas when they return to the main menu.  I have found information on creating having audio play and having text appear, but nothing with graphics or tracking.

Thanks

Alecia

I don't think I fully understand what you want to do here...

But, if you just want to track which slides have been visited (outside of Storylines in built tracking of the total number of slide visited which can be used to check course completion) then:

Create a variable for each slide you need to track the visitation of.

Then put a trigger on when time line starts for all of those slides, that sets the variable relating to that slide to true.

On the main menu, you could create either objects with states, or layers, which the state is either toggled to one with a check mark, or the layer is shown, based on if the variable related to that check mark is true or not.

Here are some slides that may illustrate what I am trying to do.

(See attached file: Variable.story)

I have four slides. There is a hot spot on three areas of the main slide
and three squares that are color coded to the three areas. If my user
clicks the 'blue room', they are taken to the 'blue room' slide. When they
go back to the main slide, I want an 'X' to appear in the blue box. I
can't figure out how to make that happen.

Can anyone give me instructions on how to do this? I guess I am really
green in this aspect of Storyline... I know I need to create a variable
with a trigger, but I don't know HOW to do that. I need help with the HOW.
I'd appreciate any instructions anyone can give me...

Thank you!
Alecia

Hum, not sure how much I can help if those aren't of use!

You use the 'X' button on the right of the interface to create variables.

You then need to create a trigger, say, when timeline starts, which changes the state of an object, to a state which has your cross on it, IF you variable equals, say, 1, or whatever you set it to with another trigger, when the user clicks on the hot spot (you'll want to have the adjust variable trigger before the jump to slide trigger so it actually runs though, the order of triggers is important)

I hope that helps, but I'm not sure it will as it's vastly less detailed than those tutorials.
