Creating own LMS

Jan 09, 2013

Hi All,

I want to create the new LMS for our organization. However, from all the discussions on this forum , i understand its quite a work.Could you please suggest me, how about me creating  my own LMS for user/group/course management using Java related technologies. And, using SCORM RTE from different vendors who provide free LMS like ilias, moodle.

Has anybody tried this option? Wherein he just has jar files from different vendors who provide the SCORM data handling mechanism?

Thanks in advance.

Hi s m,

The creation of a robust java based custom made LMS represents a huge task which I don't think can be realistically done by just one person, as it requires thousands (and I may be modest here) of man hours to build something like that from scratch.

Getting your hands on an open source java-based LMS and modifying specific modules/portlets would - to me at least - represent a more realistic option.

If you are willing to go that way, I would recommend OpenOLAT ( www.openolat.org ) as an excellent starting point.

Hope it helps,
Alex

I know this is VERY late.  A custom LMS can be done, you just have to find someone who is willing to do what you want at a cost you can afford.

While the off the shelf LMS are generally fine, matching 100% of your requirements does not happen often.  In many cases, you can still use an off the shelf product and learn how to do what you want in that system.  That's clunky, but it can save you time.

Getting a developer to create an LMS for you can be time consuming.  But, if they are truely going to build what you want, you will have what you need in the end.

Just another perspective.
