"Day in the Life of" Style video/computer-based training

Apr 05, 2018

Hello, I have been tasked with creating a 5-10 min "day in the life of" course to depict what our courier drivers do on their daily route. My manager wants a mix of video integrated into Storyline.

I have not tackled a task like this before and would welcome any suggestions on how to execute - from storyboarding, to filming, to building in Storyline.

I would start by asking the drivers! Something that put you in their shoes would seem to make sense, so i would go with a first person "point of view" shot throughout (using a GoPro or similar). It's effective and cheap. Work out what you need to show, have a driver mock up a delivery that includes all the agreed procedural elements, cut the video down to your desired length and lay it directly onto the main timeline. You could have floating icons laid directly over the top highlighting things the driver must pay attention to (messages from the office, traffic considerations, safety) that disappear as the moment passes, with pauses for essential information ("always introduce yourself on the intercom" or whatever)

Sounds like a fun project to me!

Yep! A video appears on a timeline like any other object, you can overlay visual and audio elements over it. If the video is silent, this would be very easy to do, if not, you might need to edit the video in a dedicated video editing software to selectively reduce the volume in certain parts (Storyline will let you reduce the volume of the entire video, but not individual sections, as far as I know).
