Delivering training in Rise using the discovery method (searching the intranet / internet and finding information independently)

Jan 15, 2021

Hello everyone,

I'm wanting to deliver training that's a little outside the box.

Has anyone had any feedback on training they delivered in Rise that forces learners to find information/answers themselves? I anticipate this would either be on a work intranet or the internet through searching (hence the discovery method title).

I would love to hear or see any ideas on this topic! I'm mindful that everyone learns differently, so wanted to see if it's possible to build on this idea.

Thank you in advance :)

Some ideas and thoughts.

This is a good topic - facilitating this sort of activity has often been presented as the future of learning. But in my experience it has been done mostly up to now by pointing learners toward 'bonus' extra content rather than being a basic part of the learning experience.

To build on the latter requires a change in learning culture; we could position it as free and open,  putting learners in charge of their own development. OK perhaps if the goal is just to broaden learner's background knowledge, widen perspectives etc. But as you say, learners are all different ... if they want to have a more solid way of embedding new knowledge, they could store web bookmarks, or keep their own notes, or use whizzy Learning Record Stores that LMS purveyors would recommend. Usually this is all quite messy and organisations don't have a standard infrastructure or process for it.

As a step towards it, Storyline can of course take in and keep a learner's notes. You may not want to monitor and share this activity but you could. In Rise you can always showcase various ideal locations for learners to visit and link to them, but they can't take notes, as it were.
