Designing a Continuing Ed Accredited Class

Nov 06, 2015

Hi everyone.  New to the list and just getting started in the realm of e-learning.  I have been gathering content (written, photos, HD video, animations) for several years now in anticipation of creating an on-line learning course, one that would be certified by a number of accrediting bodies for CE credit.

Here's my question:  Is there any consistency or standards that various accrediting bodies use with regards to certifying a course?  By standards I mean something like testing a user's knowledge with an in line quiz after 15 minutes of instruction - and how is the testing verified?  Are there on-line or off-line resources that you could point me to that could jump start my understanding of how this all works?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mark,

I do a lot of accreditation work and have found there is no common practice among accrediting agencies. In fact you'll find that many do not have policies which match eLearning course functionalities. The best practice would be to...

  1. Identify the accrediting bodies in which your learners would find value in earning.
  2. Go to that accrediting agency's website and find out how to be a provider of their credits. There is usually an annual fee.
  3. Typically each course needs to be applied for CE credits individually. The process varies depending upon the accrediting agency. There is usually a per course fee as well.
  4. This course application will contain all of the information you need to provide or design into your eLearning course in order to provide credits to the learner.
  5. Since you are just starting out in this area, you should do the steps above and then design your content given the accrediting agencies parameters.
