Designing for engaging e-Learning without audio or video

May 01, 2011

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the forums - just discovered you today.  What a resource!  I am the Instructional Designer for an e-Learning course in which I can't use audio or video, due to system/bandwidth constraints for the audience. I'm struggling with how to make the learning experience engaging, without any audio or video.  I'm used to having both at my disposal.  Do you have some ideas or examples you can share for ways to add interest?

I will be partnering with a media designer who will gather the images and animate the slides.  I just need some ideas for how to approach it, so I have a vision when writing the content.

I hope this makes sense.  Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Amy

We face the very same issues, so we use alot of branching with hyper-linked buttons to make the learning as engaging as possible, rather than linear and just clicking the next button all of the time. Jeanette also has a tutorial on some cool effects you can add to your course to make it more interactive.

Depending on what you want the learner to learn, I would suggest trying to put it into a scenario/story that the learner will discover the learning as they go, rather than trying to tell them what they need to learn.

Hope this helps

Blair
