Development Process

Jan 17, 2012

I just have a general question I want to throw out to the community, mainly to see what others in the industry are doing...

When I begin to design/develop a course (after meeting with the SME's and getting all of the information), how do you choose the look and feel for your courses?

I know that all courses are different, but do you follow general guidelines, do you have company/corporate templates that you use?

With my courses, I base my design on the individual class - It would be nice to have a 'one size fits all template', but for my classes that does not work.  After gathering all of the data, I draw (pen and paper!!) each slide and then translate my drawings to presenter.

What do you do?

I also design the look of each course individually. I consider the learner's jobs, the subject matter and the learner's work location. Luckily I don't have any company mandated templates to use. I can decide to use a blank PPT, one of the Articulate templates that has been shared in this community, or one of the PPT2010 design templates.

I do plan on re-using a couple of templates I've used in courses recently when I have a similar target audience. For example, I used the Office Folder template for a course with a target audience of HR staff, so I could re-use that same template for a target audience of Accounting staff.

I usually start by basing the course look and feel on the clients own branding, (their website or logo colours). I then run this by them as a storyboard before developing the content and media further. I try and offer a couple of colour schemes (contrasting and complimentary) to involve the client in the decision process

We also have the freedom to design individually.  I try to make the look/feel match the subject matter and tone of the course.  That said, we are going to explore at least making the Articulate Player template look more consistent this year to provide a little more "brand" to our courses.  That may affect some of the design choices we make (i.e. color) in the slide area.
