Disable Tabs and NEXT button until all media plays
May 19, 2019
Hi Everyone,
I have a slide with 4 tabs (each with audio). The learner needs to listen to the audio in full - on each tab - before being able to go click on the next ‘tab’. Once all 4 tabs have been visited, they can then advance to the next slide using the NEXT button. I also need to disable the NEXT button until all tabs have been visited.
I've watched a few videos, and tried to set up variables -True False and conditions etc., but I still cannot restrict the audio and the tabs- and the next button at the same time. Would someone have time to look at my file and add the correct variables/triggers?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Karyn.
If you share your file with us, we would definitely have a look for you.
Hi Joe, Thank you!
You can remove the prev/next buttons and create your own if you like. Set the buttons to appear at a certain time (like the time of the end of your audio).
Thanks Holley,
Good idea. But I also need to lock the tabs so that they have to view each tab in a row and wait until the the audio plays on each one. Then they would be able to advance to the next slide.
Gotchya. You should be able to accomplish that with variables. Maybe add +1 when each audio piece completes, and have your new button become visible when the variable reaches 4.
Hi Joey, Have you had a minute to take a look at this file? Thanks again.
Good day Karyn.
Apologies for the late reply - had a busy few days =).
I think I came up with a solution for you (please see the attached file).
I changed the tab interaction that users have to complete them sequentially (from top to bottom). The next tab will only become available once the audio on the previous tab has been listened to in its entirety.
Once all four have been viewed, the next button will become available.
I also did come cleanup on the triggers and the elements to simplify development.
Hope this helps, otherwise feel free to post any changes so that I can have a look for you.
Hi Joey,
Thank you!! This is amazing.
I've been so stressed out with this as I have 5 more similar interactions to do- and wasn't able to figure it out. Do you think I can copy and paste the variables into other slides?
Also, can I make it so that the learner can't click the first tab without listening to the intro audio in full- on the first page?
Again, thank you so much!!
Karyn
Hi Karyn.
I have made the change to only make the first item clickable one the audio on the base layer is completed.
The beauty about this design is that no variables are used to manage this behaviour. I simply used the assets you have precreated and the audio files.
Since this solution is built a self-containing unit, you should be able to copy and paste the slide into other projects and simply replace the content. Or, alternatively do a slide import from the sample file into your project.
Hope this helps =)
I you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask
Hello again,
I am so grateful to you for helping with this- and explaining how you did it. However, now when I imported the slide the text on the normal state disappeared. I think it may have something to do with compatibility by you using the Modern player- and me changing it to the Classic player?
I’m sure you’re busy, and I hate to be a pest, but would you happen to have an idea of what happened? Can you change your player to Classic?
I will try not to bother you again. I promise.
If you open the file and navigate to the buttons, are you still able to see the text inside the objects? I have had a error previously where the text box was set to 100% transparency when making similar changes.
Hi Joey,
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your assistance with my project. Honestly, you saved me!
Both interactions work correctly except -The Prev button. ( need that disabled too). I used the same trigger as the NEXT button but...? I have 5 more similar slides to develop so hopefully, the same variables will work.
Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Hi Karyn.
The triggers should work on the previous button as well with no hassle. Simply repeat the steps / configuration for the next button on the previous button. If you struggle to get it to work, simply post a reply here and I will have a look for you asap.
It has only been a pleasure to aid you in your project - every challenge is an opportunity to learn.
Happy development and good luck =)
Thanks Joey, I was able to figure out the Previous button.
Once again, I’m stumped. I spend hours trying to make these things work but…..still no luck.
This is a different course/slide I created. Same scenario, the learner must listen to audio in full and must advance in order. So, layers are disabled until the one before it has been viewed. At the end, the can advance to the next slide. I was able to create this for the first box, but the others don’t work.
Another problem- is that they use a back button to return to the first slide to click on another box. When they hit the back button on the layer-the media (main slide) starts at the beginning -and they’ve already heard it. I need the media to stop- but that’s not working.
I am learning from you each time- and hate to keep bugging you, but it’s really the first time the SME has required so much of this type of activity- in both courses. I've uploaded a slide for your review. Thank you.
