Unfortunately I just received the same note from Dropbox, same Oct 3, 2016 deadline.
What a bummer!
It might be time for me to just drop the cash and get a legit domain name... I'll definitely look at Amazon but I think I'm also going to dig into the Google Sites option and look at pros/cons either way.
Hi there! This seems to be a legitimate note from Dropbox - we've received it too. We'll be publishing more info shortly. In the meantime, please check out Tom Kuhlmann's tutorial on AWS if you're considering going that way!
It may not amount to being much, but for what it's worth I'm adding Google sites to my list for evaluation, just because I'm interested in knowing more about the service.

hi guys, apart from S3, anyone knows of other services that host SL files? Just want to evaluate my options before committing to s3.
