Ah, Baden-Württemberg.. Schaffe, schaffe, Häusle baue... They used to say there that copper wire was created between a Baden-Württemberger and a Scotsman having a tug of war over a penny or maybe an old Pfennig.
Did not know that was the origin of copper wire, Nick. (What can't one learn in the forums??)
My work and study in Germany was always somewhere in Baden-Württemberg. To this day I schwäbele ein bissle.

I never heard of thumb-pressing we cross our fingers over here - and actually most English fans will be doing that today when we face the might of the 'azzuri'. I for one would gladly swap our players with the German squad - I'd be surprised if Germany didn't make it to the semi-finals or finals. They have done so before with less talented teams. As that great striker and thinker Lukas Podolski put it: Fussball ist wie Schach, nur ohne Würfel
We cross our fingers in the US, too, Nick - I was just playing with the German equivalent "Ich drücke die Daumen". If you hold your fists tightly and press your thumbs on top - kind down on your index fingers - I think you've got it. You're right - either way a lot of people are going to be doing it as they watch today!

As always, thanks for sharing these, Michael (Heilbronn wäre gar nicht schlecht) - and I like your weltmeisterschaftliche avatar!
Thanks Jackie. Once the German team gets kicked out of the tournament (probably in the quarter or semifinals) I switch back to my usual avatar

Speaking of Podolski (and Per Mertesacker): They seem to be doing well at Arsenal. See here.
