Free-form question not resetting on second attempt

Dec 12, 2017

Hello Heroes,

I have inserted a freeform pick many question slide in a Storyline 360 course. The students have two attempts to select the correct answers. If they get it wrong the first time, I wanted the selected answers to reset to not selected, or the Normal state, instead of students having to deselect the answer and start over (trying to avoid possible confusion). So I added a variable set to False that changes to True when the Try Again button (on the Try Again layer) is clicked. Then I added triggers to reset the state of the answer selections to Normal when the variable changes to True. Everything works like a charm except when I get all the answers correct on the second attempt, SL still counts it as incorrect. I assume there's a built-in trigger of some sort that requires the incorrect selection to be deselected. Is there a way I can set that to happen without students having to deselect the incorrect answer and select correct ones? The slide in question is attached.

Thanks for your help!

Hey there Gina,

Thanks for posting your question here in the community :)

I believe the reason this is happening is because your choices are GROUPS of shapes instead of just one shape, and your trigger to change the state to Normal is only changing one of the shapes in the group, not the whole group. Sadly you cant change the state of a group, only one object at a time. If you remove the little circle with the letter in it and just use the round shape with the text answer in it, it works. I added a "selected" state to those circles, so you can see which are selected. Here's the attached file to show how I got it working. Hope this helps :)

Hi Gina,

One more thing... just wanted to point out that you can simplify this interaction further by not using a variable at all. You can simply change the state of the choices back to Normal when they click "Continue" on the Try Again layer.

A good rule of thumb that I use when it comes to "should i use states or variables?" is that if everything is happening on 1 slide, states will usually work. I find variables are usually required when the information needs to be remembered across more than 1 slide. In this case, since everything happens on 1 slide, states alone is sufficient. I attached the file so you can see.  :) Hope this is helpful.
