Freelance Heroes

Aug 02, 2012

Hi, and welcome to the "Freelance Heroes" thread, a place where Articulate Freelancers help each other. Got a question about freelancing? Or perhaps you have an e-learning asset that may be valuable to those "doin' their own thing"? This is the place to share--to give.

To start things off, I'd like to share a short list of questions that help me figure out what kind of training a potential client wants. (So often they have no idea what they want.) The list is far from exhaustive, but may be of some help. Looking forward to meeting you. --Daniel

Hi, this week I was contacted by a client who needs two e-learning courses to be produced by the end of the year.  I have already quite a lot of work on my plate (until November that is). Since my real strength is in instructional design rather than the actual building of the e-module, I was wondering if someone is interested in partnering with me on this project.

I may not have presented the opportunity correctly here. My client is a multi-billion dollar corporate company (head quarters). I do quite a lot of work for them, and more and more of it is e-learning. So far I have not done any acquisition for e-learning, yet currently 80% of what I'm doing is e-learning development. With a good partner I could do more e-learning and - more importantly, as production is not my expertise - deliver a better quality end product. Which would almost certainly result in more return business for me and my partner(s). So I guess I'm looking for more than a partner for those two projects. I'm looking for someone who really knows storyline inside out, and possibly someone who can give the e-learning a 'corporate' look.

Hi everyone,

I just created an eLearning contractor directory.

I have some other directories but they usually have mostly only companies and not individuals with specific specialties. So I though I should make some space for that.

Not really sure where this is going to go in the futur but anyway you are all welcome to put your details there.

Just as a heads up...I will be posting a major announcement about something similar to this idea within a week or two.

Again - linked to the fact that if people are looking for "eLearning resources", (and that means quite a lot these days...), then there's no clear pathway to Search.

You will hear about it here as soon as we officially launch - probably on another thread.

I am having trouble getting a storyline module to run in my LMS. I have uploaded many modules to the LMS before and since this one. I have uploaded it many times and it errors out on my attempts to run it in the LMS. To my knowledge I have published it and set the storyline player the same for all of the modules I upload. this file is larger than the others, some 50 MB but it uploads but just won't play. Does anyone have any ideas or similar problems that I might be able to check or change?

Hi AL,

Suggest you post over on the "Support" threads - you will probably get a faster answer over there.

Best wishes.

Hello Group,

I recently finished the coursework for my MA in Instructional Design & Technology from West Virginia University and will graduate in August. Currently I work from home and my job pays the bills, but I want to step out into the IDT/E-Learning  market as a freelancer. My plan is to find some local work (small projects) and work for free or possibly a small charge to cover expenses, so that I can build my portfolio.

I have vast experience as a trainer and in course design for F2F learning, but my e-learning experience in design comes entirely from my education at this point. So I really need to get my feet wet in the e-learning field. I don't want to take a full time job as an Instructional Designer because frankly it would be a step backward for me both in salary and in career goals (I like to work from home).

I would appreciate any advice, tips or opportunities this group may offer me. I've read through this thread and have learned so much already. I value your input.

Thanks,

Kyle

I assume you mean "permanent"?

I work "fulltime", (and the rest....) from home, and have never had a better salary or more exciting career goals.

Seek out those who are looking for free work - churches, charities etc. show them what you do, and tell then they can get it for free. It is all in this thread somewhere, so not sure what else to offer.

You will need to buy a copy of Storyline, but apart from that - that's how you get going.

Hello friends,

I am the director of Eduhero.net, an on-demand learning platform for educators. We are in great need of content developers for our site. We have our own in house graphic designers and Storyline developers, but we need freelancers to get course content ready for them to develop. This requires a polished PowerPoint with a script that meets the elements of our rubric. Please visit https://sites.google.com/a/esc6.net/eduherodev/call-for-courses to find unassigned courses you may be interested in. You may also contact me in my inbox.

Thank you

Hi Cathy,

Could you expand a bit on your requirements?

  • Are you looking for expertise in the specified cotent?
  • Is there adequate access to SMEs?
  • What is your proposed rate and pay schedule?
  • What communication methods are in place for the projects?
  • What timelines are you expecting?

Answers to these questions would help determine if this opportunity is a good fit.

Thank you.

Hi, Kyle: Welcome to Freelance Heroes. Good freelancers (who have been doing it awhile) generally make more than those employed by a company, so freelancing may be a good fit. Your instincts are good. Seek out orgs you like and try to convince them that they need some free training. What I've also found helpful is creating mini-courses on subjects about which I have a lot of experience.

I'd also suggest helping people on this thread (and others) as much as you can. Most people just take what they need and move on, but those who help get noticed by fellow IDs and potential clients. You might also post some stuff you built and ask for feedback. A few thoughts...anyway. Again, welcome. --Daniel

Thanks Daniel. I plan to be as active as possible. My current job is somewhat demanding of my time but it does afford me the opportunity to expand into other projects. I am more than open to assist anyone that might be interested in my help. I have already found a local church that is willing to let me turn some of their "text" lessons on their website into an e-learning lesson. Pro Bono of course, but that is what I offered to them. I will post my work here for review if any are interested in providing me with feedback. I'm excited that I've found this forum and I look forward to the future and working with you all.

I opened a new thread with this but I will also post here:

Hello Freelance Heroes!  I am in need of a Freelancer to develop 3 short modules on Legal Compliance in Storyline.  Ideally, we would like the person to be in the St. Louis area, but a similar time zone will be taken into consideration.  We expect this to be a 2-4 month project depending on your speed and expertise.

Please feel free to email me through this forum and leave me your information and I will send you the requirements and take a look at your portfolio and discuss pricing.

Thanks!

Bridget

Hello! I am in the process of building my website and would like to provide work samples of Storyline projects I have done. This may seem like a very naive question... but how do I link to the story.html file on my website? I have uploaded the published zip files using ftp. But, when I try to link to them, it requires the viewer to log in. I'm so confused. Please help.

Thanks!
