Friendly eLearning Design Competition
Apr 30, 2013
After reading a couple of posts about not having a good portfolio (or good enough) due to proprietary rights and what-not I, got this idea (fueled by Nyquil and Coffee) that maybe we could start a eLearning design competition among ourselves. I would like to base it off something similar to 11 Second Club competitions.
We can set up some guidelines and restrictions like slide count and/or length. Also provide a scenario/objective/assets. It doesn't have to be realistic. It is meant to just be fun and challenge our creativity.

Hey, Jerson
Didn't know about 11 Second Club, but I'll definitely be visiting there from time to time! Thanks for that.
Re: friendly competition... sounds great. I'd give it a crack now and again -- as time allows.
GREAT POST!
I think that's a great idea!
I was thinking about this some more - a forum I visit regularly has a photography section where they have a challenge of the month.
They start a new thread each month, which has the challenge topic. People post in the thread to say if they are signing up to it.
By a fixed date of the month everyone has to post their entry. Then there are a few days for everyone to vote. Then the winner is declared. The winner then gets to choose the challenge topic for the next month. Very simple and good fun.
I could see that working here.
Hmm, I like this idea. Actually I have this one really boring project on the go at the moment...Maybe if everyone could just send me a load of their Health and Safety module ideas I can steal them......err, I mean rate them. Sure - sounds like a great idea. Now I can crowd-source all my work!
Different challenges I was thinking about was:
I'm still trying to think of more.
Love the idea of "challenge of the month!"
I like this idea. I am new to Storyline but would like to be able to build a portfolio that I can show and that other people have crititqued. I think the goal should also be to give professional and constructive feedback to the individual on their work even if they don't "win"
Just an idea I got from reading Richard's post is that perhaps for one challenges we would have a poorly designed course posted and have people sign up to redesign it. I think this will be a great way to showcase creativity and the many ways / approaches one could take in the design and development of a course.
Fantastic idea Audrey, I'd definitely be up for that
I'm in - would love to participate!
I love this idea - I am in
This is great! Quite exciting!
Count me in
Good idea. Been wanting to do something like this for a while.
We'll support the program. I'll chat with the community managers on Monday on what we can do at our end to help.
Awesome. I've been jotting down some ideas on what we can do for some competitions.
@Tom...
That's awesome! Look forward to what you guys come back with.
Looking forward to hear from you Tom
Cheers
I love this idea - this could provide benefits to those who participate in the "challenge" and people just browsing for help and inspiration. Thanks!
This sounds awesome! If time permits with all of my other projects I'd love to do something like this.
I don't know if this forum would be the best method for the competition so I'm looking into creating a website powered by wordpress. I've looked into some rating plugins that we could use to vote on entries. If anybody else knows of a plugin that might be helpful let me know. I'll also need some sponsers for the site
I'm trying to figure out a name too. I"m thinking of 5Slides.com, since most of the competitions will be 5 slides or less. ( We might break this rule everynow and then.)
But my goal is to make it a friendly competion to showcase some creative work from our industry that allows designers to have fun and promote inspiration.
(edit: just checked on the 5slides.com domain name and it's been taken. Anybody else have any ideas for a website name?)
This sounds like a great idea, I'd love to join in when the workload allows
Perhaps the best is to come up with a simple process to start. It can be a challenge to get enough traction and mass to make it work on a routine basis. Then we can see how it evolves.
At one of the places I worked we would do little side projects to prototype and test ideas. They were never big projects and the goal was not so much to have the fanciest project. Instead it was to show off some ideas and techniques.
Jerson, that idea is gold! Looking forward to it getting started.
Let us know if you need help with anything!
Sounds good. Lets get it started.
It's a great idea, happy to help out. If we go with peer voting I would say go for anonymous submissions.
