Game Varibles

Hello everyone. I am currently working on a game and I have run into a problem with variables. I have some experience with variables but this one is driving me insane. What I am trying to do is have a series of questions throughout the game and depending on which answer you pick, it will then change the state of my responses on the results slide at the end of the game to match what the user picked. I have put a variable reference text box in the results slide which is showing that the variable is working correctly but the state of my responses isn't changing. I have tried both true/false variable and value variables and neither are doing what I want. Any help would be great. Also I'm just trying to get the basic format of the game done so please forgive the visual flaws :)
