How can I create a "Return to course" button that remembers the slide user was on when they left a scene?

I have created a "help scene" where users go to access help related material. This area is accessed by a global "Help" button in the player. What I need is a "Return to course" button within the help area (so on the slide not in the player) that will return the user to the slide they were on when they exited the course scene and entered the help scene. Could this be done perhaps programatically with variables? Can I store the value of the slide number of the course when they exit the course scene and use it on a button trigger to return the user to where they left off (and then I assume clear the value)?
An example in the attached file would be:
- user browses course to slide 3
- user exits course and enters the help area (you'll see help button in player if you publish)
- user views help slides 1,2 & 3
- user then hits "returned to course" button an is returned to course slide 3.
Is this possible using variables or Javascript?

A small design change would make your life easier, if you can make all the help section into one slide and then a jump to previous slide will take them back to where they left off

Thanks Phil, that's a good suggestion and I'll most likely go this road for now.
Can anyone advise if there is a way to resolve my initial query?
You can do it using variables, you would have to set a unique value of a variable before you leave the slide, and would then need a trigger to jump to each slide in the course on condition you variable is equal to the unique reference. It is much more work.

Indeed, but good to know it can be done in case the help section can't be done in one slide.
If anyone has an example file they want to upload on how the variables would work, that would be useful.
Thanks.
Mathews idea us a great one and one j gave used a lot
You could have multiple master layers if needed

That's an interesting suggestion Matthew and one I'll need to look into. I was under the impression that anything on the master slide would appear layer-wise at the bottom. So if you had layers on your course slide, then the master slide layer would show under these.
Any layer is always on top

Well that's good news for a whole range of reasons! Thanks Matthew. I'm doing a quick test and can't seem to figure out how to trigger the master layer. On the slide trigger wizard the layer I made in the master doesn't how up in the "Show layer" list.
You can trigger it off a button on the master or set a trigger on the master to show a layer when a numeric variable changes (I normally call this help). The on your button on the slide a a button and add a trigger to add 1 to the variable.
