How can I get a detailed report on survey questions from Totara LMS (or any LMS)?

Dec 04, 2018

We just bought a new LMS called Totara (New Zeeland-based company). The LMS is based on Moodle. To my surprise it doesn´t seem to report any survey questions from Storyline (or any other tool).

I like to put survey questions throughout my courses, where they best fit in and where they can engage the learner by making them think of their own every-day-situation and sharing that with at least the course administrator. A lot of valuable information could be gathered and analysed if this had worked as it´s supposed to.

Now our distributor of Totara tells us it´s impossible or very difficult to make this work in this particular LMS, and they claim it´s not any easier in any other LMS that they know of. I found that very hard to believe. Why would Articulate make it so easy for us to create survey questions if it turns out it´s nearly impossible to gather the input in any LMS?

Is there any work-around?

I´ve heard of inserting a SurveyMonkey as a web object, but the thing is that I rarely want a whole survey with lots of survey questions in a row to assess something in depth. As mentioned I like to scatter them across the whole course, where I find them most useful. Wouldn´t it be an awkward solution to use several SurveyMonkey-objects for one single survey question at a time?

Thankful in advance for all responses!

You might want to look at creating variables (text or number) for questions and pushing those variables to a Google Sheet.  It's fairly simple to do.  But if you need to track the learner that submitted those answers you'd probably also need a variable from your LMS that has their name or ask them to enter their name and push that as well to the google sheet.

Depends on what you are tracking and why.
