How do you get started?

Dec 10, 2014

Hello!

My name is Kayla and I am fascinated with the e-learning industry. The problem is, I am not even in it. I am currently an executive for a big box retailer, and I was recruited right out of University. I have realized that retail is not for me! I really want to quit my job and become a learning designer, however, I am not sure how to get started! I took the online course on E-Learning and Instructional Design through ATD, and I also went to DevLearn. But I feel OVERWHELMED! How do I get started/hired when I do not have the experience yet? Do I take the chance, quit my job, take some time learning Storyline, and start freelancing?

What does everyone think? How did you all start out?

Hey Kayla,

What an exciting time for you - you're exploring new grounds! :)

I can highly recommend our weekly e-learning challenges to get some practice and feedback and see other people's approaches. If you have the time you can still do it while you're in your current job. When you've completed some of the challenges you can use these projects for a portfolio to show to potential employers.
