How to Create a Torn Paper Edge Effect

Hello Heroes,

The image from Tom's blog post about free fonts caught my eye because of the torn paper effect that was used for each font. It made me think that there must be some quick way to achieve that look, if someone took the effort to create that image!

A nice application of this torn paper effect would be to show a snippet of a document the user can download (such as worksheets, PDFs, job aids, etc). I tend to shy away from doing it, since it would be extra effort in Photoshop or Illustrator. (I do have Adobe CS5, so I could hop into an editing program if needed.)

Does anyone know of a convenient way to produce this torn edge effect?
