How to do an interactive tutorial with screenshots

Feb 21, 2012

Hi everyone!

Probably most of you have seen this: You're learning to use a program and the presentation itself shows you how to use it. But it goes beyond: When the course asks you to input words - like "now in the subject box write Writing the subject" - and you go there and type that.

I'm strongly curious about how to do those kind of tutorials using screenshots and interactive input.

Can someone help me with this? I want to do it but I'm affraid I don't know the exact tool to do that.

Thank you!

Hi Adriano! One simple way to do this is by using screenshots and simple tools in PowerPoint like animations and hyperlinks. Here are a couple examples: https://player.vimeo.com/video/149035985 and https://player.vimeo.com/video/204871935 ... would that approach give you what you're looking for?

Hi Jeanette! Well, in fact that's not the approach I'm looking for. Although it's like simulation, it doesn't offer text input. I'm aiming to this: let's say I'm doing a MS Word 2010 tutorial and I want to do it interactive with the user: Clicking toolbar buttons and the user can enter text to change format, size, font, etc. Articulate can do SOME of that functions except text input in simulations. It would be interesting to have those features - like Adobe Captivate - in the next articulate release.

Thank you indeed and I'm really appreciated with your answer.

Ah, I get what you mean. Right now the only way to incorporate user input would be to use Quizmaker... there are a few question types such as fill-in-the-blank questions, which you can use to simulate data entry. Here's an example that Tom created a while back. You might also be interested to know that very soon we'll be releasing Articulate Storyline, which contains super-robust screen recording features that I think would fit exactly what you're looking for. Storyline is currently in beta, but we're getting very close to launch. If you're interested, you can sign up here to be notified as soon as it's available.

Nice to hear that Jeanette! Right now I'm using Adobe Captivate demo and I signed up for Storyline. Captivate is really good and fits what I need, but I'm really curious about what Storyline has to offer. Good luck!

Returning to my topic, I've been able to do some demos with software, including text input and others in Adobe Captivate. I hope Storyline will be able to do the same and more. Thank you!
