Ideas on Creating role based courses in ppt

Mar 02, 2019

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get some ideas on creating modules for a new system rolling out in at our company. There are different roles within the system so I trying to build an entire course using several modules. It will target multiple areas matched by role. Everyone would get the standard overview and navigation, but not sure how to build from there. Any suggestions or templates would be appreciated as I am a beginner I this area.

Thanks

Hi Shanna,

I answered a similar query at the link below, which may be of help to you. If you want to use Storyline, you might want to try the option I proposed here, with the common content inserted prior to the menu slide, but if you would prefer to use Rise, I would recommend looking at Tom Kuhlmann's demo at the bottom of the link.

Whichever way you go, the basic solution is to provide a common start to your course, followed by role selection either through a Storyline menu slide or via a Rise Button Stack and then individual targeted course content dependent on the role selection made by the user.

If using Storyline,  I would put the role content in individual scenes for each role. If using Rise, you would need to put the role content into individual lessons for each role, so that they can be accessed via a Button Stack.

It's fairly straightforward to create different branches within a Storyline course. We do this sometimes, relying on the learner to self-identify his or her role. Here's a recent example: EHS 0260 General Electrical Safety.

Everyone gets the introductory material, and then there's a selection menu where learners can identify the one or more work environments that apply to them:

Choose Your Work Environment menu

Within each branch, there's a question asking the learner to self-identify as either a supervisor or individual contributor (there's a little bit of extra material for supervisors):

Are you a supervisor? self-identification question

Where it could get complicated is if you need to keep records of exactly who took which branch(es). We don't need to do that in this course--we simply don't unlock the Get Credit button until the learner completes at least one module. So if someone got credit for the course, we know they took at least one of the three modules, and we're trusting them to choose the one (or more) that apply to them. Depending on your level of trust with your employees, this may or may not work for you. If not, you may have to do a bit more work to store the modules each learner completed.
