ILT to eLearning Best Practices

Apr 13, 2012

We have a large number of recorded webinars and powerpoints/scripts from Instructor-Led sessions that I've been asked to 'get up on the LMS.' I'd like to turn these into actual courses, rather than just posting the files. Does anyone have any good resources for what it takes to turn ILT into eLearning? Suggested texts?

I was going to list the same post today with a slant towards specific instructional strategies.  Many of my internal clients have developed instructor led training for a topic and want a WBT version of the same class so that they can provide their employees with 2 different delivery options while obtaining similiar learning experineces and outcomes.

I wanted to create a template that had something like, "If ILT has a discussion in order to gather ideas, then options to do this in a WBT format include XXX.

I would love to partner with anyone who's interested in developing this type of template.  My goal is to speed up the process when taking an ILT course to WBT and they need the instructional strategy to be similiar, or not.

Hi Rachel... I'd like to share an anecdote with you on the subject of converting ILT to e-learning.

Several years ago I was the training manager for a company that produced anti-shoplifting systems (you know, those pedestals you see at the exits of stores everywhere). The training I managed was for the technicians who installed and serviced these systems. Our training was instructor led -- at great expense, since we had to bring trainees into a location where we had the actual equipment available. As you can imagine, the training was heavily "hands-on."

I had a proposal from a training production outfit to convert all of this to e-learning, and had some pressure from higher-ups to accept it, since the savings in training costs would be very impressive.

To make a long story short, I turned the proposal down, because the medium of e-learning could not meet the performance objectives of the training.

The point I'm getting to is that you'll need to evaluate the performance objectives of each of these ILT courses, and make a determination whether e-learning can meet those objectives. If not, you'll have to decide whether to leave it as ILT, of perhaps develop a blended approach combing ILT and e-learning.
