I'm having a little bit of a difficult time figuring out your end goal. By the looks of it, I would use variables. Assign a variable for each correct/incorrect answer that will then guide the learner depending on the variable achieved.
I don't see you need any variables, I would just add the incorrect image to the selected state, and two triggers to show -ve feedback if 1 and 3 selected show +ve if 2 and 4 selected

You can use triggers, layers and a variable to achieve what you want.
