In search of opinion: how to present the content scripts to your clients?

Oct 05, 2015

Hello, I received this 117 page powerpoint from my client. The contents are there, but disorganized. Some parts are redundant. I reorganized them and chopped the contents into eight scenes in Articulate storyline, but haven't added any real development to it. I am going to meet with the client this week, to get their approval about this new arrangement of the content. Can someone share how you usually do this? Or do you all feel it is better to finish writing the scripts, before showing them the re-arrangement of the contents?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Hi Maggie,

This is a great question and one that gets debated here on a semi-regular basis.  Clearly there is a case to be made on both sides of the argument.  But for me, I've found over the years it's best to go with an approval of the structure/approach before investing anyone's time/emotion into scripting.

I've found one of the quickest methods to be a "detailed draft" created in Word so it's fast to work with and modify. I use three columns:

  1. Topic Name - Sub name   (to easily show the structure)
  2. Content / Learning Points -  (What will be delivered, not how. Basically a glorified outline of main learning points but can also include exact phrasing in quotes if a particular point warrants it at this stage - think stakeholder hot button)
  3. Interaction / Delivery Notes - (Basically how it will be delivered, not what. I detail things like "drag and drop interaction" or "read and answer key questions". )

I've found this approach to be easier to create and tweak, but far more importantly...   easier for stakeholders and SMEs to visualize the content and structure without getting lost in the exact phrasing or visual representation (common traps).

Hope this helps and let us know how you make out,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks so much for the tips. " it's best to go with an approval of the structure/approach before investing anyone's time/emotion into scripting."-- I found this is so true. I also like you mentioned about including exact phrasing in quotes to catch the stakeholder's attention. I think I may use a content map generator incorporating your advice of adding content/learning points. I will come back to update how it goes.

Thanks!
