We are in the process of developing new eLearnings for our employees.  As part of one of the courses, one of our directors would like an activity where the learner would see an illustrated version of a piece of equipment and an illustrated version of the instrument needed to clean that equipment.  The learner would then need to click on the cleaning instrument, place it on the equipment, and "clean" it for 20 seconds.  If they stop before 20 seconds, they would need to do it again before moving on in the course.

What do you feel is the best way to accomplish this? My first thought was Flash, although I'm not extremely experienced in it.  We do have Storyline, Lectora, and Captivate, and can really get access to just about any software package needed.  Any advice, suggestions, links, templates, tutorials, etc. would be much appreciated!

Personally, I would get them to place the machine on the equipment, then change the state of a bunch of time options to "Normal" from hidden, and get them to choose which is the correct time, providing feedback on why it is important to do that, and the effect of doing less.

Architecturally much simpler, and allows you to provide some custom feedback and just use States.

I played around with the file over the weekend, and it will definitely work for what i need.  How would I make it so that they have to get it correct in order to move on to the next part of the course?  Would it be best to just put a "continue" link in the message that appears when they get it correct?

Glenn a small yet important point

I tested out your slide as a typical learner and I it didn't work following the current instructions.

At present they are "Drag the instrument onto the equipment to start clean the equipment."

I did just that and the timer did not start, because the learner must also drop the instrument onto the equipment (This action starts the timer) and then the learner can start cleaning!

Perhaps use something like below to be more precise

"Drag and drop the instrument onto the equipment, then start to clean the equipment."

What may seem obvious to us designers/developers could drive a learner batty with frustration!

Hi Glenn,

How do you want learners to pass the test? Should it be precisely 20 seconds? Or as long as they "clean" at least 20 seconds. 

We can actually put both a red and green light om the slide. The red light keeps on between 0-19 seconds, and once it turns to 20, the green light is on, as an indicator telling learners that "okay, we cleaned the equipment enough. Let's stop cleaning it."

Great point, Eimear. I totally agree with "What may seem obvious to us designers/developers could drive a learner batty with frustration! " We should make the instructions more clear for the learners.

Actually got it figured out - just added a button with the same triggers as Text Box 3 that links to the next slide, and then set the Player navigation restrictions to Restricted so learners can't move on to a future slide without completing the one before it.

Any idea why this wouldn't work on an iPad in HTML5 format?  I published it, and the rest of the course works fine, but this page doesn't.  It shows up find initially, but then when I drag the instrument over to the equipment and drop it, everything but the instructions and buttons disappears - no shapes, no timer, etc.  If I hit Stop, everything comes back, with the timer at 1 second.

I've never published a course on iPad before, so I couldn't really tell the reason why it doesn't work. But in my experience, sometimes when you publish a course even in HTML, weird things happen like the shapes that should exist are missing, shapes that do not exist are displaying. I would suggest you publish it again to see if it works.
