Is there a way to lock pathways?

May 01, 2017

Hi all,

I'd like to give the learners an option to chose the order that they take four sections of the course using a menu slide but I don't want them to be able to access the quiz at the end until all four parts have been looked at.  Is there a way to do this?

Also...how do you search in the forum?  I couldn't see if this question had been asked before.

Hi Laura,

You can certainly do this. Someone asked a similar question not too long ago as you expected.

There may be a creative way to lock only part of the built-in menu. But, I would probably create a hub page that branches out to each section. After all four sections have been visited, it will activate the button to navigate to the final test. I'll explain some of the steps in a bit.

I attached a file that should fit your needs.

Also, if you want to search the forums there should be a little magnifying glass icon in the upper right of your browser.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you want to use this method: (all of it is included in the example file)

  • As you can see in the file, there is a hub page that branches to each section including the final test. (you can set the scenes up however you like)
  • Set the slide properties for the hub page to When revisiting: Resume saved state. This way Storyline can track which sections they have visited.
  • Make sure each of the four main navigation buttons has a visited state. It is helpful to change the visited state slightly so the learner can identify which sections they have visited. In this case, we added a checkmark to the visited states.
  • Set the Initial state of the Final Test button to Disabled. This way the learner will not be able to navigate to the final test until they have visited all four sections.
  • Add a trigger to the hub page that changes the state of the Final Test button to Normal once all four of the other buttons have a State of Visited.

I hope this is helpful! If you have anymore questions or need further detail/clarification, please dont hesitate to ask.
