Is there any solution to Flash for iOS out there yet?

Apr 03, 2012

We have been creating Flash presentations and quizzes for our website and it's been working well so far EXCEPT for the one pesky problem that the site is pretty much useless for iPad/iPhone users. Is there any solution out there for Flash on iOS yet? (Yes, it's possible to create a dedicated app but for our niche market it is not quite feasible for us, both in developing the app but also in terms of maintaining and synchronizing our contents on two different platforms.) I heard that the Flash Media Server 4.5 is going to allow Flash movies to be streamed to iOS, but I'm not sure if it is going to work for interactive Flash such as those generated by QuizMaker, for example.

Hi,

There are several browers that you can download from Apps in Itunes that will allow you to run your flash from your LMS.

Rover is one but it is not commercially savy and may not be the corporate choice.  However I tested it with the LMS and was able to take a course and the quiz and the results were tracked.

Here are a list of other browsers that run flash that I plan to test with our LMS:

Skyfire

SmokeScreen

Photon Flash Browser

iSwifter Browser

Puffin

Opera

All of you users who actually use this information and test one of these please report back to the group.....but especially me.

Cynthia - Also trying to do the same in terms of running flash on an iPad/iPhone through an LMS (Blackboard).

Tried Skyfire, Photon, and iSwifter and had no success with any of them.

iSwifter had a lot of wierd errors happening - unexpected crashing, annoying "review" and "buy" pop-ups even after i had purchased the software. Would not work with engage, quiz interactions and videos.

Skyfire created an actual video from the articulate file - didn't like this because it did not provide for the full functionality of player controls. Also didn't work with our embedded web objects and video content. Additionally, I found that it was not very userfriendly

Photon wouldn't even allow me or my colleagues to log-in to our LMS system - when we tried provide a URL of the articulate presentation, nothing loaded. No dice.

So, the good news is, we have had some success with the Puffin Web Browser. Everything functions normally - player controls, engage interactions, quizmaker quizzes - with the exception of webobjects. We have developed a workaround though for that if you decide to go that route and are interested. We are actually providing information to our students on how to play articulate lectures on iPad/iPhone using Puffin, so I should have some more interesting feedback on its reception and functionality in a few weeks.

The higher-ups aren't too thrilled about the app name ('puffin')... so we are still searching for functional alternatives. I would love to hear if anyone else has had any success with any other applications?

We've actually had mixed reviews for those using Puffin - a lot of students report slow loading speeds, slow response times, etc. Unfortunately, it seems we are going to have to purchase Storyline and republish everything so that it is iOS compatible - a complete pain, but I don't think there is any application out there that has truly mastered flash for articulate presentations.

Can you take a quiz that was created with QuizMaker and open it with Storyline to publish it to iOS? Or do you have to start from scratch again with Storyline?

To Articulate staff on this list, is there any plan to have an upgraded version of QuizMaker (or other presentation software) that can publish to iOS?

What is the story of Frash now? Have anyone tried it? I believe you have to jailbreak your iPad first.

I have another application I did not mention earlier, some companies have a problem with the fact that this browser was built for educational use.  However it works very well if you would like to try it out for yourselves with your flash content, LMS, and Quizes.

I think it beats republishing it is a FREE browser you can download to your Iphone, Ipad called ROVER.  Let me know what you think?
