I'm not entirely sure of this query, but have you tried un-ticking the base layer check box? that way it shouldn't display your base layer objects when selecting a layer, so you won't be able to click on anything?
Sounds like there is a trigger on your menu button that is doing something you don't want. I'd start by checking that. (click on the menu button, then look at the triggers that show up as attached to it on the right hand slide. Most likely culprits - jump to slide (the one you are on), or hide layer. If you want to share the file might be easier to see the problem.)

I think your layer on the master slide is set to hide other layers, just uncheck it in the layer properties dialogue.
