Learner-created flash cards and learning plans

Jul 31, 2015

Hello, I'm thinking of using Storyline (which I haven't yet used) to develop an e-learning project with, amongst other things, the following features:

  • the possibility for learners to create their own practice activities, for example, flashcards with items they want to focus on. This would be either for their own personal use or to share with other learners.; and could be flashcards or other types of quiz.

  • the possibility for learners to create and track all their learning activities, including activities not offered on the e-learning platform (other reading, videos, classes, etc): the idea would be for them to plan what they intended to do (date, time, duration, etc) and to keep a log of what they have done (activity, when completed, time spent, etc

If anyone knows whether this is possible in Storyline, or (even better) knows of examples of these types of learner-created activities, it would be very useful for me in deciding whether Storyline (with all its other advantages) would be a good choice.

Thank you in advance for your help.

The first one may be possible in Storyline but with a lot of configuring depending on your vision. However, I'd probably look into a system that is meant for that (not sure which ones that would be).

The second item is a Learning Management System (LMS) feature, which Storyline is not.

Storyline is meant to create the courses that learners take. Storyline courses are typically uploaded into a Learning Management System that serves as essentially a library of courses. LMS' are where courses are tracked as complete and much more.

Think of it as a video loaded on YouTube, where the video is the Storyline course and the LMS is the YouTube site itself. The video by itself provides limited data, but YouTube provides the commentary, likes/dislikes, how many people have watched the entire video, etc. and uses the limited data the video provides (e.g. video format, length of the video, whether or not it's in HD, etc) to provide different functionalities.

For your second requirement, I'd take a look at Degreed.com. They're essentially Pinterest for learning. While it may not fit all of your requirements, you can see what's out there. Learners could use other tools to create the activities and then collect them in an account like Degreed.

Hi Rachel, Thank you for taking the time to send a detailed and very helpful reply. I guessed the learner-created content might be better with a dedicated application - I'll investigate.

I wasn't sure how much control the learner (as opposed to the course designer) would have over their LMS and I hadn't come across Degreed, so I'll certainly look into that, too.

Thanks once again for your advice.
