Leaving a course early

Can I design my course so that my students can leave and return to the same page later?

Hi William,

By default Storyline is set to prompt the learner if they want to resume where they left off. If you want, you can change it to always resume. As far as adding an exit button, you can either build your own in the slide using a trigger with the action Exit Course, or you can follow these instructions to add the exit button to the player.

Allison,

Thank you for your fast response. However the links you provided are for Storyline, not Storyline2. I do need to create an Exit Button. The Exit Tab works, but I need all controls to have the same appearance and in the same general area. The player properties in Storyline and Storyline2 are not the same. I know there must be a way to create a custom button, but I am not seeing it.

Allison,

Storyline2 has the Previous, Next and Submit buttons. The Exit tab is in the upper right hand corner and looks nothing like a button. I want all navigation controls to look the same and be in the lower right corner. Thanks.

Ashley,

Storyline2 has three buttons, Previous, Next, and Submit. The Exit tab is located in the upper right corner of the screen, and looks nothing like a button. I need all course navigation to be uniform in appearance and location (i.e. buttons on the lower right). It seems like a simple request, but I don't see how to accomplish it.

Unfortunately, there's no way to make the exit button appear at the bottom of the player along with the next & previous buttons in Storyline 2. In Storyline 360/3, you can do some custom coding, but even that isn't super simple. Owen Holt shows how to do that around the 4-minute mark in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmsnC0HvnRk

Your other option would be to scrap the native previous & next buttons and make your own (along with a matching exit course button). I think your best bet is to have it at the top as a player tab. Having it at the bottom or just next to previous & next might lead to some accidental clicks that close people out of the course when they didn't mean too.

Allison,

I like your idea of scrapping the native buttons and creating my own. I prefer Buttons over tabs. I am not too concerned about an inadvertent exit, as all progress is saved and the course will resume where it was left off. I am not sure how to go about creating the custom buttons. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks again.

Sure thing! In this video, Ashley Chiasson walks through the process. She's using Storyline 360, but the process is 98% the same for Storyline 2 (360 also has a built-in swipe gesture that you'll turn off). The trigger for your custom button will have the same action as what you would have done with the player tab link.
