LMS for Extended Enterprise

Hey does anyone have any experience with creating courses for Extended Enterprise learners? I work for a small (but growing) software company that needs a way to lower their customer support call volume through training their customers. I am thinking like- maybe creating a cool certification program with ribbons and rewards for completing courses I create with Storyline. 

Has anyone done this before? Do you need a special LMS just for that or will a regular LMS do? What is your experience in creating content for customers to be smarter as well as employees?
