Looking for Ideas on building a new course on Supervisory skills.

Mar 16, 2015

Hello everyone,

It's been great to be part of this community and I would like to thank you all for piling up all fantastic ideas at one place so, people like me can dig and get one from it.

I am working with my client these days where they want me to build an e-learning course. The course is all about improving supervisor skills. Recently they conducted face-to-face training on the same topic and now, they want me to use the same content in this course.

I don't want to rely on that content, want to do something different.

For the time being,  I am just working on the demo so; I can sell what I have in my mind.

I have created a prototype, first version of my idea and would like to share this with you so, I will know if their is any part am missing.

PS it is just a prototype, have to work on layout. Just want to share the idea and love to get your feedback on the idea.

your feedback will be highly appreciated.

Hi Mohammad,

I just had a quick look at your sample and I think it is a great start! I like how you set up the menu so I can see where I'm at in the course.

Here are a couple things I would suggest having a look at for your next version:

- Add the progress bar (which contains a play/pause button) to your player so that people can pause the course as well as go back and listen to something again without restarting the entire slide.

- I noticed some of the objects disappear before the end of the slide (see this screenshot, for example). I would go through and look at the timeline of each slide and make sure all the objects go until the end.

- In regards to layouts, if you're looking for inspiration I would suggest having a look at the Storyline and PowerPoint templates in the downloads section.

Hope that helps! :)

Hi Mohammad,

Allison's given you some great feedback already. I hope my input is of help to you as well.

From an instructional design standpoint, I like how you started off with a pre-test/quiz to help learners self-assess their understanding of what it takes to be a good supervisor. I think that approach can be really effective for gaining buy-in.

One thing that I think is even more helpful is to have your learners identify the specific skills or characteristics they associate with being a good supervisor. In other words, you could have them select some skills, behaviors, or characteristics that they think a good supervisor needs, such as being organized, self-motivated, having a positive attitude, being detail oriented, etc. And then you could ask them to evaluate themselves against those behaviors/skills.

Later in the course (or perhaps in a companion course) you could also help them apply their understanding of these skills/behaviors by using a scenario where learners can choose how to respond to different situations or to challenges that they may face in real life. This gives them a safe opportunity to practice and learn from their mistakes.

I hope all of these ideas are helpful and not too overwhelming. I'm sure your fellow community members will weigh in with their thoughts, too. Best wishes on your course and please keep us posted on how it goes over with your client!

Hi Mohammad,

Here are a few design suggestions.

I do like the color scheme. Very simple and not distracting.

It seems like you only have one layout style, this got really boring very fast. I would create 2-3 different layouts and use them. If you use the same layout between slides, i would take out the animations of the items that are constant (like the title in the upper right).

There is also a lot of white space on some of the slides. Will you be adding more imagery/words?

I'm not a big fan of the cut-off characters.  Here is a link to a tutorial on how to easily create character bubbles.

I hate to sound negative, but just want to get more information, You said you wanted to do something different, how is this different from other stuff you have done or what already exists?

When I was approached to do some sales training and I wanted to something really different, I looked at examples outside of elearning modules. The one big inspiration for the course was a explainer video created by jellyvision.  I created my module using that video as an inspiration and the users loved it. While this may not be suitable for all organizations, it a good idea to look for ideas outside of the elearning box.

Thanks everyone for sharing valuable feedback and suggestions.

Allison,

Progress Bar added (Checked)
Objects disappearing ( Checked) - Now they are appearing

There is one layout I have taken from the download section to make it more attractive. :) Thanks.

Trina,

If I understood correctly, you mean to say that I need to tell them more about the specific skills like; behaviors, being organized, self-motivated, having a positive attitude, being detail oriented, etc. required to be a good supervisor. If yes, I am planning to do that. Nevertheless, I am also planning to prepare a test which will evaluate their skills and give feedbacks accordingly.

I just had a meeting with my client and the guy liked it. However, there were some feedbacks but overall, he liked the path I chose and would like me to go ahead with the same idea.

Jerson,

Thanks for giving me an idea about the color scheme. I am planning to change the color scheme based on the topics. So, every new scheme will give an alert of new topic. Like this, it will help my audience know that they are getting something different this time, will not get bored. What you think?

No, you are fine and I like positive criticism. When I read the content, it was just a fat folder with lots of pages. I would like to put attraction in the content. Imagine you have a big folder where content is written with no images, voiceover  and no interactions.  The things I did is to write the script, put graphics, interactions by apply ADDIE's model.

The next what I want to do is to create interactive scenarios by using Motion Path. I am designing that now.

The video of jelly vision is amazing. However, can you please guide which software is best to create videos like this?

Thanks everyone. :)

Hi Mohammad,

I think Jellyvision used Flash since it is interactive. I've managed to use many of their techniques using the tools available in Storyline.  Jellyvision and Epipheo have both influenced and inspired the way I tell stories in my eLearning courses though I do have to throttle back some of it to fit our company culture.
