Looking for some guidance and resource for help

Jul 18, 2019

Good morning! I need some help importing a PowerPoint presentation into this tool. The challenge I'm facing is one of time. I was given access to this tool yesterday, with a deadline of 3 weeks to complete an 8-hour online training module.

Fortunately, the PP presentation is 99% complete. Also, fortunately, it's very simple and straight-forward without many of the shape feature or active button creations. 90% of it is strictly verbiage. If anyone has some free time to either discuss this or correspond via email, or this chat board, I could use the assistance!

Hi Shaffer,

Thanks for posting your question here in the community. Here's a tutorial on how to import PPT content into Storyline 360: Importing Slides from PowerPoint

Further than that, if you have any specific questions about this process that you'd like help with, please let us know here in the forums so we can answer them :)

Hello! Storyline 360 is definitely your best option to convert your PowerPoint presentation. If you don't own the software, download the 30-day trial at https://articulate.com/360/trial. Look on https://articulate.com homepage if you can't access the url.

Once you have downloaded the software, open it up and create a new project file. Once open, double-click the Untitled Slide under the Untitled Scene. Select from the home banner "Design". On the far left, click "Story Size". Click on the Story Size pulldown and select "Custom". Here you will type in the dimensions of your PPT presentation (typically 1024x768 or if 16:9 it will be 1920x1080). Select "Scale to Fit" and press the "OK" button.

Now you will import your PowerPoint presentation into Storyline by selecting "File" from the menu banner, "Import" and then the PowerPoint icon. Locate your PPT file and click the "Open" button". A screen will pop up after reading the PowerPoint file and allow you to select what slides you want to include in the Storyline file. Make sure all of the slides are selected (they will be light blue) and select the "Insert into scene" pull-down and select "Current Scene". Once done, select the "Import" button. This may take a while when importing large PPT presentations. A dialog might come up stating you are missing fonts. If you don't have the same font from the PPT because it was developed on another computer, then select the "OK" button and change the font accordingly.

You will notice once the slides are imported that Storyline is basically the same layout as PowerPoint; so the learning curve isn't so bad. If you didn't select "Current Scene" from the "Insert Slides" screen, then you will need to delete the "Untitled Scene" when the Storyline file opens. Do this by right-clicking the Untitled Scene and selecting "Delete". Make sure you don't select the slide, but the actual box the slide is housed in. Storyline will ask "Are you sure you want to delete this scene and all the slides in the scene?". Select "Yes" and proceed editing.

Set up your "Slide Master" (if needed) under "View" and adjust the slide objects on each slide if they are slightly off from the import (usually Storyline does a great job at importing files). You can add speech-to-text by selecting "Insert", then "Audio", then "Text-to-Speech". Copy and paste your narration (if you have any) into the script area and select a narrator's voice above (e.g. Joanna). Listen to the narrator before accepting the audio script by pressing "Preview Voice". Select the "Insert" button to place it on your slide. Do this for every slide in the project where needed.

Ensure all slide animations are working the same as the PPT file by selecting the slide from the left view and under the menu banner select "Preview" and then "This Slide". You can listen to the whole project by selecting Preview>Entire Project.

Change the slide names if you are going to add a menu to the published file. Do this by double-clicking the slide name (currently reads "Untitled Slide") and change to a name that is appropriate for the slide.

In order to adjust the menu and interface, click "Home" on the main banner and then "Player". Go through the tabs to adjust the way you want the user to view, to include the menu, if needed. If not, then deselect the checkmark. Click the "OK" button when finished.

After you have edited your entire Storyline project you will need to publish it. Do this by selecting "Publish" from your menu banner. If you are creating the course for an LMS, select "LMS" from the left menu. You will need to find out SCORM package is being used to read the course properly. If you are only publishing for the Web, select "Web" from the left menu, change the "Title". Select "Folder (ellipsis button to the far right) and browse where you want your published file to be located.

Once published you will be given the option to View Project, Email, FTP, Zip, or open the folder you published it to.

If you wait to view your project in its folder, open the folder and select "story_html5.html" in Google Chrome or Firefox. Internet Explorer sometimes has issues running Storyline files. View your project. If it is good to go, zip the file and you're done! Have some coffee or something a little stronger depending on your state of mind;) Have fun. Storyline 360 is a great product to use!

NOTE: Hopefully I have included all of the steps to convert your PPT presentation. If not, let me know and I can walk you through any missing steps.
