Is there a maximum number of states that an object (image in this case) can have before SL3 starts going haywire? I have about 30 states on my image and SL3 seems to be crashing and misbehaving. I'm thinking that is why but I could be wrong. It's never behaved like this before.
Hi Jason, As Phill already said, it's mostly related to the size and complexity of the content. I had a fullscreen image in one project which had around 55 states, that image caused storyline to go laggy, but in case of another project where the object was much smaller and just a simple circle, it had 700 states and file was working quite well without any lag or crashing.

I would try a restart, may also be related to what is in the states.
I dont think there is a fixed limit for most things in SL more related to the size and complexity of content.
