Media as Timeline Variable

Nov 20, 2019

Hi Community!

Question for you (or maybe a challenge) -- is there a way to map layers to inserted media, rather than the timeline?

I would like to produce something akin to an interactive video: the screen shows a walkthrough of a museum, but when the cursor hovers over a certain piece of art, the video pauses and shows a pop-up with additional information about that art -- when the cursor is off the hot-spot, the video continues. Of course, this trigger-area can't always be on screen, as the video will be changing all the time.

Hope someone has an idea for this! I'm excited to read some answers!

Talk soon,

Hi Rob,

Here is a simple example of what can be done using hotspots, layers and triggers to achieve the outcome you are after.

The base layer contains a video, a 100% transparent rectangle over the top of the video (this prevents the user accidentally toggling the video on and off by clicking on the screen) and a hotspot over the top of the Sydney Opera House.

When the user hovers the mouse over the opera house, a text layer appears over the top, which remains visible until the users moves the mouse away from the hotspot. At the same time, the video is paused until the mouse moves away.

I have set the hotspot up on the timeline to only be visible from 2 seconds to 6 seconds to replicate your requirement to allow for the hotspot to only be available when an item is visible on the video (I realise that the opera house is always visible, but this is simply designed to show you how this could be achieved). If you preview the file and move the cursor back and forth across the opera house, you will see that the text only appears and the video only pauses during this four second period.

Hope this helps.
