metric vs. standard measurements
Oct 05, 2012
Hi All:
I'm working on a project where I let the user choose Metric or Standard measurements. For all of you who use Metric (i.e., the world other than the U.S.), what unit is most common to use when referring to a person's height? Do you say that person is 'x' meters tall or 'x' centimeters tall? Random question I know, but important to this module. From the U.S. perspective, we say, "John is 6 feet, 2 inches," rather than, "John is 74 inches tall."

Either is fine.
Personally - many of us in the UK still use feet and inches...

Thanks Bruce.
For height, saying 165cm is more common than 1.64m but as Bruce says you do see both... Now if you had a question about US pints and UK pints that would be a longer story altogether
Ft and inches common in Canada, inches only used with kids (mainly to justify meeting high requirement for amusement parks and car seats). Although TBH I'm the generation where they adopted metric in primary school, so while I fill up on gas in litres and travel kilometers, I could not tell you how tall I am in meters or kilograms. Not fully literate in one or the other. Sad but true.
...and yet the US seems to have enthusiastically adopted "9mm" !
Heh, heh. Thanks all. @Sasha: As far as the pint discussion--I think it's more important what goes into the pint. My preference: Guinness.
