Mix of slides, interactions, quizzes, videos

Jan 18, 2013

Hello,

What do you think is the ideal mix of Presenter slides (mine tend to average about a minute each), Engage interactions, videos, and knowledge checks?  How many?  How long?  My average modules are 20-25 minutes.

Thanks.

Hi Alison.

Whatever it takes to create an engaging and useful course for your audience, based on the (measurable) learning objectives.

I have created linear A-Z "electronic slideshows", and the client has been delighted, because that is what they required. I am currently creating a 12-slide course where my client has said "If it looks anything like PowerPoint I will be upset  (we get on very well by the way....)

In terms of one minute, would you like watching a wildlife film/documentary where they freeze-framed on the polar bear or lizard for one minute?

I believe I am right in saying that one of the things that was not promoted but made the original "Start Wars" so unique for the time, and pacy was the fact (?) that no scene lasted more than 5 seconds. Even if untrue, it is a good concept....

What we do is not about "ideals" or formulae - it is about "fit for purpose".

Have you ever asked your users/learners (ones who have just completed a course...) whether they thought it was "ideal" or not? It is a good place to start :)

Hope that helps, or at least starts some thought processes.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your feedback.  They're not static slides, they're animated, so things are coming in, going out during that time.  Maybe I should have worded it differently.  I was looking for a mix between things that happen without the user doing anything more than clicking next and things where more input is required or things that look completely different than the rest of the presentation.  My users are all our employees, so it's not like I have distinct clients with differing needs/expectations.  I was looking more for whether anyone knows of any studies or anything stating something like "users learn best when they have 2 minutes of interaction for every 5 minutes of presentation" or something like that, but I guess that would depend on the subject matter.  Any other thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks.
