I want a photo to motion path "scroll" from top to bottom to draw attention to a particular area on the image. I want the area ABOVE that image to disappear as if it scrolled off the page. How do I do that? Add an object over top that appears to cover it up with a trigger on the timeline?
It sounds like you are wanting to 'mask' an object that is animated. I would take the same approach you mentioned and have an object on a layer above the image. Depending on your needs, you could use a timeline-based trigger as well.
If you run into any challenges while trying to accomplish this, please feel free to share the file, or that specific slide. I am sure myself or someone else can help problem-solve it!.

Hi Megan,
Take a look at the recent scrolling panel challenge. Using a scrolling panel to hold your content may be a neat solution to what you're describing.
