Multiple Hyperlink Styles?

Jun 17, 2021

Anyone know if you can create and apply multiple hyperlink styles in one file?

I though you could create a new color style (duplicate the one I am using), apply ONLY to the desired slide, then adjust hyperlink styles to that slide.  But it seems to default to the one Hyperlink style that a file seems to accept.

If you Modify the Hyperlink style, it does so for all in the file. You can add a New Style (see attached) but it does not seem to allow you to add a new Hyperlink style.

The issue is I have 1) white text on black backgrounds, 2) black text on white backgrounds and 3) white text on orange backgrounds etc.  No one combination will work for all 3 and meeting client color scheme.  White, black or orange visited state won't work for all 3.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Jeff,

You are correct. You can have one hyperlink style in your project.

Would you be able to include a consistent color style to the text boxes that would also include a hyperlink or create a button for any links needed to match the color scheme?

I look forward to hearing ideas from others in the community that may have dealt with a similar requirement.

Just to add onto this, here is an example: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/636e4ae5-78ad-4468-a1b4-de888d708bda/review

Also, source file attached.

Not only is it tough to get links correctly colored, the visited states change to more than one color of text, black AND white after visiting them.  Thinking this may be a bug?

Hi Leslie.

I have a similar issue with hyperlink styles.  I use two different styles - one blue and one white.  The blue is standard.  I use a white hyperlink on the 'Vision - Instructions Layout slide' as the text is white.

Something that has worked in the past to resolve this issue is to use the 'Design' tab.  However, it is not working for me today.

It is an ongoing issue.

As a potential solution: I suggest that the development team create an option under 'text styles' to apply a hyperlink style to the current slide.

Hi Joe, thank you for your suggestion. I really hoped I would have a solution, but it does not always work.

Let's say the default hyperlink style is white text to work on a black background. But on some screens, we have reveal or feedback layers that require black text on a light background.

In some cases, we can simply recolour the links within the text to black, and it works.

However, this does not always apply the colour to the hover state. So I end up with a link that disappears when you hover over it. And worse still, sometimes any text that comes after the hyperlink also turns white when you hover over the link.

To be honest, it is a mess and I will have to resort to using invisible hotspots over the top of underlined text which is not as accessible as real inline links.

Thanks for reading.

Hello all, does anyone has a tip to force a hyperlink NOT to use the hover state from the hyperlink text style.

It is the bane of my life at the moment.

It would appear that there is no sure way to do this, as sometimes the hover state is the same as the coloured text while other times it will match the hyperlink style, meaning the link will disappear when I hover over it.

I really need two hyperlink styles. One for dark backgrounds and another for light backgrounds. Using hotspots over underlined text is a way around it, but feels like a poor workaround and not as accessible as it could be.

Thank you in advance.

I'm having a somewhat related issue - Is it possible that the hyperlink "visited" state is defined per slide and not per project (or as a consistent style).

Context: I have made myself an own template file with our own branding - I've mixed and matched several previously used slide layouts - adapted everything, all fonts / colors look perfect. The hyperlink Normal state also works well based on the Style. However the hyperlink visited state needed to be changed on each slide individually. (I didn't check for the other hyperlink states).

From my point of view this is a strange behavior - I would expect all hyperlink states in a style to cover all slides in a project.

Thanks

Hello Stefan,

The hover state of hyperlinks inherit its style from the normal state. This is the expected behavior as defined in this article. Here's a quick recording of the behavior that I see on my end, which shows that the custom color that I select for the normal state is carried over to the hover and visited state in newly added project slides.

Can I ask if you are able to replicate the behavior in a new project file? Additionally, would you be willing to make a recording of the behavior you're seeing so I can test the issue by following your steps?

Hi Stefan!

Thanks for sharing the screen recording!

Reviewing your setup, it appears that you already have the visited state format changed for some of your hyperlinks. If you wanted to test this functionality on a new project file as I did, you’ll see that the visited state inherits the formatting that was defined initially:

  1. Create a new Storyline 360 file, add a text box, then add a hyperlink.
  2. Change the hyperlink visited state color to something noticeable. I chose Purple.
  3. On a new slide, add a new text box, then a new hyperlink.
  4. Preview the course, and test the hyperlink visited state color for the first slide and then the one that was added after. You should see the color choice was retained without you having to manually change it.

I've recorded a quick Peek to show you my results when testing it out on my end!

Please let me know if this worked for you, or if you have any more questions!

Thanks Steven

I see it works on blank slides - as I move along in my project I will find out if it also works with slides which I import from a template.

Best regards

Stefan

I'm having the same issue as Jeff - I have callouts on some of my slides that require the link text (all four states) to be white, and other links throughout the project that are to be blue.  I'm a little taken aback that this isn't an option for a top-of-the-heap design and authoring app.  Using invisible hot spots isn't an option due to accessibility requirements, and it still wouldn't address the style of the link states...  call me high-maintenance, but it seems this should a lot easier than it presently is.

Unless anyone can suggest a viable workaround, my next step is to re-address the approved visual design with the client, to accommodate an unfortunate limitation of the software.

I really hope this makes it into a future update soon!

If anyone is still struggling with this, a colleague at work offered a pretty decent workaround.

  1. Select the body of text where you would like the hyperlink to be placed. Format the text to show the link, e.g. underline, change of colour etc.
  2. Create a custom hover state (It cannot be a built in trigger from Storyline, you could call it _hover)
  3. Change the hyperlink text to the colour, style you want.
  4. Then create a hotspot and place it over the hyperlink text.
  5. Create two triggers:
    1. Jump to url when user clicks hotspot
    2. Change state of "body text name" when user hover overs "body text name", tick the box that says "Restore previous state when the user hovers out"

This should produce the desired results as a fairly quick workaround.

Hope this helps!
