New Forums

Feb 03, 2011

I am generally not enjoying the new forums -- I find the discussion disjointed and hard to follow. In my opinion the old forums were much better or at least more functional.

That said I realize there is probably no going back.

I am having particular difficulty trying to something that was at the core of my usage in the old format. In particular there was a url I could go to that provided a list of all unread posts across all forums. I was able to quickly scan them, view what I wanted to view and mark all as read for the next time.

There seems to be no easy way to do that in the new forums or maybe I can't see the forest for the trees.

I'm glad to see this thread because it just reaffirms what a passionate, great community we have! I even emailed Gerry privately and was like "Dude, when am I getting your email about what you hate about the new forums?" The first thing I noticed about the new format was the lack of a New Posts view. That is sad and maybe there's something we can technically do about that someday. I definitely love moving the Verified Answer to the top of the thread.

I too miss not being able to see whose online. Maybe there's something we can do about that, too.

I think, for me, great forums and great communities start with the people in them and ours are top notch. That's why I think the new forum will be just as good as the old forums and then some.Heck, some of our best employees, like Brian Batt, were once just contributors to our forums before joining Articulate. :)

If there is anything you would like to see in our new forums that isn't there, definitely submit a feature request. Looking forward to seeing all of the great contributions here. I'm really proud of the new site and glad to see all of the excellent new resources available to our community.

Thanks Robert that works, however if you subscribe to a thread for interest without having posted in it (which I had previously before for this one) there doesn't seem to be a list anywhere of these...

Getting the hang of the new format though, it looks great! Having the tutorials and downloads all in one place is so useful, much easier than trying to remember where I filed the specific blog email with the download links...

Every time you make a change there is an adjustment period during which you have to understand what is the best and fastest way to get what you want.

Browsing the web from users is often routine and this leads the user to perform the same actions as always, day after day, often unconsciously.
It's like if I had learned a language and I had used it for years, and then one day the world start talking another. It takes time because I can understand, and let you know what I have to say.

I think that this site is no exception. I think it's much more complete of the old forum, though, perhaps, as Steve Flowers said, I would agree to split the forum into categories, for each product, as it was before.

Curosity question to the Articulate folks--have you thought about collecting information on any local Articulate user groups (e.g., where they are, who to contact, etc.).  Be nice to have that info for folks in one spot.

And, if you wanted to take that one step further, maybe even providing space for local user groups to store their materials, files, minutes, etc?

Love the new digs but I also miss my daily digest.  Maybe it's just a habit but it was a great way of getting the hot topics in my face on a daily basis.  I'll probably go with the folder in outlook like Tom described to organize the emails but I wish I had the daily digest so I can get straight to the hot topics without sifting through emails.

Hi all,

I couldn't resist getting in on this discussion. As someone who hasn't posted very much in the past I have to say that "starting over" is quite encouraging. I know it was sometimes overwhelming and scary to post to forums with such gifted people. With a fresh start (and post counts reset) I feel like discussions are open again and that I may not just be repeating what others have said.

Just the fact that Articulate has continued such amazing support in the community goes above and beyond what other companies do. For those who use other companies' products... if they do have forums, how often do you see their employees dedicated to them. Articulate has several full time employees dedicated to providing resources and answering forum posts.

I too want to echo that the downloads and tutorials are FANTASTIC. Gathering these resources together in a meaningful structure makes up for any challenges I might have with the new forum format.

I know things are all roses and we all accept change at different rates. So... hang in there. We'll get used to the changes eventually.

Seriously,

I'm enjoying the new look-and-feel of the "new" Forums.

I do go back and forth between the old and the new to repost URLs to previous threads into some new conversations here.

I'm believing that we'll eventually see in this new space the best of the old and new.

Kudos to the Community Team, and I'm excited for the additional features you'll reveal in time.

Oh, more thing.  Call me silly again for this .  But I liked the old feature of being able to see who was in the forums.  Made me feel connected with them.

@Gerry  ... One word...

"Stalker!!" ROTF LOL

Hey, do you have time to make a PSD image of my reply, Gerry the Stalker?

Yikes!     Never thought of it as "stalking."

I prefer the "Phantom of the Forums."  Soon to be a new Broadway show from Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber.  Instead of a chandelier falling toward the audience at the end of the first act, it'll be a huge mound of cold, wet Minnesota snow! :)

As for PSD-ing of contributors in forums, it's when you least expect it, then . . .  (that's Rule # 37 in the "How to Be a Doofus Stalker for Dummies" book.)  :)

I almost posted something the other day, but YES, the Reply text/form boxes do not work on an iPad.

The "old" Forums worked fine on my iPad to reply to threads.

I hope Articulate has this issue on their "Bugs List" and will fix it very, very soon.

Here's hoping none of us are on the "Bug List."
