I'm looking for some recent (2009 to present) research articles regarding online learning vs. traditional classroom learning. If anyone has some references or ideas of where to look that would be much appreciated!
Do a search for scholarly documents on Google. ISTE would be another good source. Search for online learning effectiveness. You may also wish to look up some people such as Siemour Papert, Gagne, Gardner, or Siemons.
A few weeks ago I was preparing a research proposal for a client to do a project on usability testing of some online / distance education courses they offer. I figured it might be useful to see what previous research had found as to the important variables associated with success in remote learning.
I spent a few days doing the research and preparing a summary of the findings for use in the proposal. I catagorized the research results into the following topics:
Attrition and completion rates
Technology and learning
Learner-centered psychological principles
Motivation and engagement
Self-regulation
Information-age mindset
Effectiveness of interactive learning
Learning management systems
Much of the research focused on online courses at post-secondary institutions. However, many of the findings would apply to developing effective e-learning materials in a training environment as well.
I have made no attempt to integrate, consolidate or interpret the research findings ... just report them. I personally found the research very interesting and useful as a background for developing effective online learning materials. Hopefully you will too.
You can get a copy of this summary research paper here.
I am trying to look into recent research papers, without being affiliated with an higher education access. For example, I go to scholar.google.com and search "e-learning" research .
While I am able to get TO SEE articles, but mostly just access to abstracts, a lot from the SPRINGER database, wanting ~$30 per article!
My cousin teachers at Butler, but the .acsm file ((.acsm files work in the Adobe Digital Editions ... player? library?) he sent wants the vendor used, and then an id/pword for it (see attached png) .
