Process Training Examples

Sep 18, 2015

Anyone have any good ideas and/or examples of eLearning courses that walk a learner through a detailed process in a fun and engaging way? I've been tasked with creating a course that will essentially tell a Project Manager how to do their job. I have a process map with at least 50 steps that they need to take to manage a generic project. I shutter at the thought of creating something that literally goes through each step. I am working with Articulate Studio and have limited audio and video production capabilities. Looking for some inspiration!

Do you really need to do it all in a course, or could you create job aids for the full process and just focus your course on the most critical areas? I would prioritize the steps. Steps that are commonly done wrong or skipped are high priority, as are ones that can really make or break a project.

Given sufficient time, I'd create a simulated project. Come up with something kind of fun but still realistic enough to show the pain points. Start at the beginning of the process and have learners make decisions at the key points. Condense some of the steps together; pick some of the steps that can be done consistently with a job aid and just teach them how to use the support. Focus the interaction on the really key points you identified as priorities.

There's no way anyone's going to remember a 50-step process after a single-event training course, regardless of how amazing your design and development are. You'll need later performance support.

Another alternative would be a bunch of short courses that explain each step as the PMs need them. Create one course as an overview of the process. In that course, make sure they know when, how, and why to access the mini-tutorials.
