Quickest way to create e-learning

Jul 13, 2017

I am getting better acclimated to these wonderful Articulate programs...

SL2 and Replay.

I like the functionality of creating the .story with the callouts for... click this, click that but it seems to take a good bit of work to narrate and coordinate the screen with the voice.

Replay is great for a down and dirty get it done quick but then the interactivity is not as easily put into Replay with SL2.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious.  Maybe I need to work with them more to get to where I need to be.

Let me know your thoughts, folks.

Hi Allison,

Thank you for your reply.

The one hang up I am currently having is a minor issue with SL2 itself.

I have posted this before here in the Forum.

The systems I am developing content for are web based. When creating a Screen Recording/Software Demo whenever I CLICK the mouse, the resulting caption on the slide ends up like this....

Clic
k

As you can imagine this happens a LOT.... click this, click that....

So in the end I will need to edit a LOT of Caption Boxes.

Essentially I think what I need to do is use these programs more to get to a place where I know what I'm doing. The resident expert in my company left unexpectedly before we could work together.  She had lots of tips and hints which are now LOST to me.

I guess the other thing is deciding when to use REPLY and when to use SL2 and how to best integrate them.
ie. Create a piece in REPLAY, then do a Software Demo for a few slides... another REPLY.... another demo....

those are my thoughts for now.

Any suggestions are very happily received.

Hi David,

So if I'm understanding correctly one of the things that ends up taking up a lot of your time is editing captions when you're doing screencasts. The problem being that Storyline doesn't pick up on the name of the button you're actually clicking on. Is that right?

Regarding the Replay vs. Storyline thing I would say you only need to use Replay when you need an .mp4 file. Otherwise, Storyline allows you to do screencasting just as well and offers more options. The only difference being that if you create it in Storyline you can never export your screencast as a .mp4 file.

I hope that helps!

The piece of the button I'm clicking.... Yes that is the main issue.  I would believe there is no button description ... or hyperlink description for SL2 to pick up on so all it pulls is the action... CLICK.

I am also seeing that when I do a Screencast in SL2, there is not much way of editing a piece out of the middle. There isn't in REPLAY either. What I end up doing is short bits that I can edit the beginning and the end of (nothing in the middle can be touched) and they are short enough that if I want or need to re-record it isn't a long piece to re-do.

I'll figure things out.  It just takes time.

Hi David,

I'm not exactly sure how Storyline pulls the button name, but it would seem that the application you're using doesn't allow Storyline to access that information. Unfortunately I'm not sure what we can do about that on our end. You could try to get in touch with our support team and see if they have any ideas.

It's true that if you're using the older version of Replay (the one that came with Storyline 2) there's no way to edit out the middle. In the new version (that comes with Articulate 360) allows you to do that.

Regarding Storyline, you can make edits to step-by-step slides using the Action Fine Tuning features. Click here to learn more

I hope that helps!
