Quiz point value not working
Dec 18, 2015
Does the point value I give each quiz question affect the user’s final grade and their ability to achieve my 80% passing grade?
I’ve designed the quiz so that if the user gets the answer correct on the first try, they get a grade of 10 points, on the second attempt 7 points. If their second try is not correct, they advance to the next question (I want them to receive no points if they can’t get the answer in 2 attempts.)
However, when I preview the quiz and enter all the correct answers on all the first attempt, my results slide says I only received 56%, I should receive 100%.
I can’t find a user guide video or print tutorial that addresses this, so I could use some help please.
Also, is it normal for me not to be able to access the “Review Quiz” function on preview?
Thanks!

Hi Kima
How have you customised your scoring to apply the two point values.
My understanding is only one point value can be assigned to correct or incorrect responses per question (can be positive or negative).
Well, I've duplicated each quiz question, using a trigger that links from the first question slide to the duplicated question if the user gets first question incorrect, and a trigger that skips the second duplicated question slide if the user gets the initial question correct. I've assigned the different point values to each question.
Now that I'm writing this, I'm wondering if the user get's the first question correct and therefore bypasses the second question slide because of the trigger, would the point value of that second question be deducted from the results total. Could that be the problem and is there a way to fix it?
Essentially, I want to to give users two attempts to answer the question with a varying point value, but maybe that's not possible.
can you upload the story file - might be easier for someone to help you if they can see how everything is setup
Is this what you were trying to ahieve ? Check it out. If you are using question bank, make sure to uncheck the option to "draw questions in random". Let me know if this is not what you were looking for.

I think I know where the problem lies. Please see the attached file. So I made the first question attempt worth 10 points, if user gets it wrong, they advance to a duplicate question worth 7 points. However, the result slide is combining both point values 10 + 7 - correct? The problem isn’t with the points I’ve assigned each question, it’s with the fact that the results slide tabulates every point value of every question.
My intention is to give users a “second chance” with a minor deduction in points if they are successful at their second attempt, and a 0 if they can’t get the correct answer within 2 tries (there are only 3 answers.) So if I have 5 questions, 100% would be 50 points (with first attempts receiving 10 points each.) If the user got 2 of the 5 questions on the second try, they would get 44 points (second tries receive 7 points, so 30 + 14) and 88%.
I guess in order to do this I would need to change the properties of the result slide – is this possible or is there another way to a give students a second attempt but penalize them with a lesser point value?
Thanks for the advice so far, but I don't think I was explaining the problem correctly. Hopefully the example will help.
You can always do it with the help of variables and a custom result slide. Check out the modified file. Be sure to add variables to calculate percentages depending upon the number of questions.

Thanks Sanal,
This is great. However, when I choose the correct answer on my first try, thus receiving the highest grade points, I would like it to say 100% not "10," because "10" doesn't really make sense since the "passing grade" is given as a percentage. Maybe I can figure out how to do this, but if you had an answer on the tip of your fingers, I'd sure appreciate it :)
You can just remove the "%score%" variable from the result slide and the actual score will be gone. Only keep the "%percent%" variable. Hope this helps.
Hi Kima
is this a graded quiz that is going to an LMS? Or you just want to show the learner their result in the module?
Thanks, I'll play with it some more.
It will be graded and published with Articulate Online
