Random Question on Dropbox.

Apr 05, 2012

I know that a lot of people in the community post files using dropbox.  Being that I am not familiar with it, I wanted to see if any of you out there know the answer to a question I received from one of our SMEs.

Given the scenario that two people are working on a project together and their computers are not syncing to the dropbox they are just placing a specific file in it, here are the questions:

  1. Can the first person post a file, and then send a notification to the second person that the file has been placed in the dropbox?
  2. Can the second person then download the file and make edits to it, and then repost it?
  3. Will the first person then receive notification that the second person has reposted it?

I think that sums it up.

Thank you.

By default, taskbar notifications are displayed. In your scenario, this would definitely work.

In the case that you had two people working on the same files (happens sometimes), Dropbox will create a conflicted copy labeled File (Some dude's conflicted copy).  I do almost all of my work in Dropbox - large complex assemblies of hundreds or thousands of files. With good communication, it's a great system for collaboration, sync and version control.
