I believe good design (instructional or graphic) must consider the learner's/viewer's perspective - i.e., usability. That's why I always recommend "Design of Everyday Things" or any other book by Don Norman.
I recently finished reading Design for how people learn by Julie Dirksen. I highly recommened it. It was very informative but broken down into easy to understand practical advice
