Remote learners on very low bandwidth

Aug 08, 2011

Hello from Melbourne,

Australia is a big island.  Getting eLearning to remote learners with the lowest of bandwidth can be a challenge.  Thinking outside the box on this one is a must.

I'm looking to make contact with  Articulate colleagues who are faced with the similar bandwidth constraints to exchange ideas and to brainstorm.

Any takers?

Sincerely,

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

I can't say I have a lot of learners in remote locations, but I have done a little research and can say James Kingsly has a really nice solution if you are finding that Articulate is just not loading quickly enough for your remote users.

Hi Nicole,

One of the things that I consider first is the length of lesson/module.  Can it be broken down further?  If that is the case, then deliver it in smaller chunks so that the bandwidth is less.  I have broken mods down into several 3-5 minute sections to make that work.  Is it a must that these learners be online?  You may also consider delivering some portions of the learning offline as well, or making certain things downloadable.

Nicole,

Random thought on low-bandwidth and interactivity...

Many times we assume that low-bandwidth users have to settle for less interactivity. While we all love the cool look, fancy graphic or stunning flash animation, they are not required to make the course engaging.

Possibly the best examples I can provide are the old-school MUDs and MUSHes (online gaming) that existed before the days of high-bandwidth. Some of these are highly immersive and engaging experiences that stand up even by today's standards.

If you want to chat more about that idea, feel free to message me.

Bob
