Skills and Qualifications

Mar 28, 2017

Hi Community!

My names Matt, I have been using Storyline 2 now for about 6 months and recently decided to shift gears and increase the pace of my learning. I am interested in becoming a high quality Instructional Developer, or Learning Developer, which ever it is. Though in my pursuit to learn everything at once I often find myself getting lost. What skills and qualifications and programs are necessary in order to be able to produce the best quality LMS's out there? Essentially I am looking for direction on where to focus my learning next. I am pretty familiar with the functionality or Storyline 2 and I want to take things to the next level!

Hi Matt,

Without knowing too much about the content you aim to create, I'd highly recommend getting into some of the adobe packages such as Premiere Pro, After Effects, Character Animator, Photoshop/Illustrator and Audition. That'll cover making assets, videos, animations, and voice over work.

I'd also check out the free ebooks available on this site, it not only goes into what medium we should be using but also why we use it! It'll make life a lot easier in the long run when it comes to choosing the best type training output that benefits both the material and the learner, whether that be a simple infographic or a full e-learn package.

You'll notice I've not covered specific qualifications you'll need, personally I feel it's more about building up an online presence and portfolio that demonstrates what you are capable of. That being said there are courses out there that specialise in instructional design, I did a level 3 course in adult education which I'd argue benefited me just as much!

Hope this helps, Darren

Thanks for the feedback Darren!

I am currently looking into Adobe, so thank you for mentioning those specific ones. I will also take a look into Instructional Design courses! The E-books have been very beneficial and I have gone through most of them, I am at the stage where I am looking for that higher learning to make cleaner looking and higher quality modules.
