States, Triggers, and Variables

Jun 24, 2015

Hello all!

I have a (hopefully!) easy question.  In the past, I've used a "Sign in" screen for my course, and then throughout the course, I've had that person's name mentioned by the avatar.

I recently came back from a conference and wanted to step up my game by using this same trick with something added.

1. Earlier in a course, I want to show the user a set of 6 photos, and the user clicks one of those photos.

2. I created variables for each of the photos and set each of their Default Values to "False".

3. I created a trigger on that same slide to change the value for each photo to a value of "True" if the user left-clicks it.

4. On the next slide, I have a rectangle set up to an initial value of Hidden but with each of the states created using 1 of the 6 photos, and triggers set up to change the State of the rectangle to a different state with one of the pictures from the previous slide, based on whether that picture has a "True" value from when the user clicked it.

I get to the slide where the rectangle should show the state based on whichever variable possesses the "True" value and it always comes up with nothing.  I know its probably an easy process and its something I am overlooking.  Would anyone happen to know?

HI Greg, I had similar issues before. If your logic is correct (that is, all triggers check out) you may want to:

A) Recreate the states on the rectangle because things get a "little sketchy" at times when you copy states over.  In my case, I've been successful doing this by copying from the original shape, but try recreating one manually to test it out.

B) Instead of states, try using layers with the same logic on each layer.

If nothing works, please share the file and I'll be happy to help.

Hi guys!  Thanks for the fast responses!  Come to find out, you were both right.  It was an issue with the second slide where once the picture was clicked, the correct trigger had to be created to allow that value to trigger the state change.

I went back to articulate's link to create variables/triggers, and my second slide's trigger should have been set up the way that the trigger was under the heading "Evaluating Variables to Trigger Conditional Actions".  Once I mimicked that trigger, everything transferred over as it should.

Thanks so much for both of your help!
